OpenAI Tells Staff It Expects IPO Within a Year, Readies Tender at $687.69 a Share
OpenAI expects to go public within the next year, according to The Information, which cited a staff memo sent earlier this week by Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki. The report gives a clearer timetable after the ChatGPT maker disclosed on June 8 that it had confidentially submitted a draft S-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission without deciding on IPO timing, and said OpenAI is preparing a tender offer "very soon" at a current share price of $687.69.
The memo also covered the possibility of recursive self-improvement and OpenAI's next model. The Information reported the company is preparing to release a new AI model, codenamed 5.6, this month, a more detailed near-term plan than OpenAI's earlier public statement that IPO timing had not been decided and that it might remain private for a while.
