OpenAI Submits Confidential S-1 for IPO, Leaves Timing Undecided
OpenAI has confidentially submitted a draft S-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering, taking a formal step toward a listing after earlier reports that it was preparing for a market debut. The ChatGPT maker said it has not decided on timing and that it may remain private for a while because some things are easier to do as a private company, though the filing gives it the option to go public sooner.
The filing comes days after reports that OpenAI was planning its biggest ChatGPT overhaul since launch, turning the service into a superapp combining Codex, AI agents, image generation and partner applications as it pushes for higher-margin enterprise business. The Financial Times said a listing could value OpenAI at more than $1 trillion as it races Anthropic to Wall Street.
