US Naval Blockade Slashes Iran's Crude Exports 84% in May, Lowest in 6 Years
Iran's crude oil exports fell 84% in May from April as a US naval blockade tightened pressure on Tehran's oil trade, according to Lloyd's List. Exports were 87% below the previous 12-month average, and shipments shifted toward smaller tankers because larger vessels are easier to intercept. Shipping data and analysts had earlier put May crude and condensate exports well below 300,000 barrels a day, the lowest in at least six years.
More than 50 days into the blockade of Iran's southern ports, Iraq's Umm Qasr has emerged as a new hub for Iran-bound cargo, trade sources say, while Tehran's first major workaround through Oman's Khasab has become slower, busier and more expensive. Earlier estimates also suggested about 80 million barrels of Iranian oil and petrochemicals were stranded behind the blockade last month.
