Trump Reveals US Rejected Special Forces Mission to Retrieve Iran Enriched Uranium
President Donald Trump said the US had considered sending special operations forces to retrieve Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile but abandoned the idea because the mission would have required weeks inside a war zone, heavy airlift equipment and the risk of what he called a “Jimmy Carter” moment. Trump later said Washington does not need an agreement with Tehran to get the material, adding that the US could take it "right now," though he said there was "no reason to" because it is "entombed."
The remarks put fresh emphasis on the uranium issue at the center of diplomacy after Trump earlier described the US as being in final negotiations to end the conflict, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no agreement had been reached and the disposition of Iran’s enriched uranium remained the key unresolved point. Trump also said he does not want to meet Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei but could do so if a deal is reached and would be respectful; Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the idea and said communication with Khamenei remains continuous and that he has full control of state affairs.
