SpaceX Wins Grimes County Tax Exemption for $55 Billion Terafab AI Chip Plant
Grimes County commissioners voted 4-1 to grant SpaceX a tax increment reinvestment zone and a full exemption on property taxes tied to its proposed $55 billion Terafab AI chip plant east of College Station, Texas.
The approval came despite local backlash over the incentives. Elon Musk said other locations remain under consideration, but argued a Grimes County site would still lift the county's annual tax revenue by about 25% and, with taxes from employees and contractors, exceed all the revenue the county currently earns. He said property taxes on the plant's costly chipmaking equipment would put SpaceX at a competitive disadvantage against other fabs.
