Alphabet Upsizes Share Sale for AI to $84.75 Billion, Earmarks Nearly $30 Billion for Employee Stock-Award Taxes
Alphabet expanded its share sale to $84.75 billion from $80 billion after strong demand for the deal, and plans to use nearly $30 billion of the proceeds to cover tax obligations tied to employee stock awards. The Google parent has said the financing will help fund AI infrastructure and compute capacity as demand for its AI services exceeds available supply.
The package is Alphabet's first major common equity issuance in nearly two decades, reversing years of buybacks. The original structure included $30 billion of underwritten offerings, a $40 billion at-the-market program and a $10 billion private placement to Berkshire Hathaway; Alphabet still expects 2026 capital spending of $180 billion to $190 billion and said 2027 capex will increase significantly.
