UK, France Finalize Hormuz Mine-Clearing Mission Plans Ahead of Possible US-Iran Deal
The UK and France have finalized operational planning to lead a multinational mine-clearing mission in the Strait of Hormuz that could begin within days of any agreement between the US and Iran to reopen the waterway, according to people familiar with the matter. British and French operators in the region are also prepared to open a line of communication with Tehran on operational matters, the people said.
The move adds a concrete operational step to diplomacy around the strait after President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that talks with Iran could yield a memorandum of understanding by the end of the week or over the weekend. Trump said such a deal would reopen Hormuz immediately and the US would seek possession of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said enriched uranium remains the key issue and no agreement has been reached.
