Trump Says Iran Talks Could Yield Weekend Result as Enriched Uranium Remains Key Issue
President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran could produce a result over the weekend, though he also warned they might run another two to three weeks, and said Tehran was close to “signing papers.” Trump said the US would retrieve Iran’s enriched uranium and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately once a memorandum of understanding is signed, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there is still no deal and enriched uranium remains the key issue.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s contacts with Washington are not cut off, but there has been no progress and both sides are still studying exchanged texts. In comments published by IRGC-affiliated Fars, a member of Iran’s negotiating delegation media team said any memorandum would follow a four-stage mechanism beginning with a halt to military action on all fronts, followed by steps on Hormuz, the blockade, oil restrictions, sanctions and some blocked assets, then talks on sanctions and the nuclear file, and finally a monitoring committee.
