Rubio Says US Won't Lift Iran Sanctions Just for Reopening Hormuz
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the first condition in US talks with Iran is reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but clarified that Washington has not offered sanctions relief simply in exchange for restoring passage through the waterway. Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio said any sanctions relief would depend on Tehran making concessions on its nuclear program, and said Iran had said it would reopen the strait once the ceasefire with the US took effect but has not done so.
The remarks sharpen the terms of a possible memorandum of understanding after President Donald Trump said Monday he expected the US and Iran to reach an agreement within a week to extend the ceasefire and reopen Hormuz. Iranian media later reported that Tehran was still reviewing the latest US draft and had not yet sent a response to mediators, citing mistrust of Washington's commitments.
