Iran Suspends US Message Exchanges, Threatens Hormuz Closure as Brent Hits $96
Iran’s foreign minister said Monday that the ceasefire with Washington applied ‘on all fronts,’ including Lebanon. Hours later, IRGC-affiliated Tasnim reported that Iranian negotiators would suspend message exchanges with the US through intermediaries over Israeli strikes in Lebanon against Hezbollah, and that Iran and the ‘resistance front’ planned to completely block the Strait of Hormuz and activate other fronts, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Oil surged on the report, with Brent crude rising to $96 a barrel.
The episode underscored Tehran’s position that Lebanon is part of the ceasefire with the US. At the same time, President Masoud Pezeshkian told Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that Iran was prepared to facilitate maritime traffic in Hormuz and ease passage for Japanese vessels. Trump said he had not been informed of any suspension, later said he was unconcerned if negotiations were over, and reiterated that the US would keep its blockade in place. US Central Command said forces had redirected 121 commercial vessels and disabled five since the blockade began on April 13.
