Macron Backs Trump’s U.S.-Iran Deal Push, Offers Hormuz Security Mission
French President Emmanuel Macron said he spoke with Donald Trump and backed the U.S. push to quickly reach an agreement with Iran, saying France is ready to support implementation of any accord. Macron said an international mission assembled with Britain and other partners could be deployed once a deal is concluded to help secure maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, and that Paris could also contribute expertise to broader negotiations, particularly on nuclear issues.
The endorsement adds European backing to negotiations that remain unsettled despite Trump saying earlier that Iran “really wants” a deal. Washington and Tehran, negotiating through mediators, have continued to trade amendments to a draft memorandum described as a 60-day framework for halting violence, reopening Hormuz and setting up wider nuclear talks, while Iranian officials have said no final agreement has been reached. Macron also said he stressed the need for a robust ceasefire in Lebanon and support for Lebanese authorities.
