US Payrolls Rise 172,000 in May as Traders Fully Price Fed Hike by Year-End
US nonfarm payrolls increased by 172,000 in May, beating forecasts, while the unemployment rate held at 4.3%. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% from April and 3.4% from a year earlier, the workweek was unchanged at 34.3 hours and labor-force participation held at 61.8%; private payrolls rose 120,000 and government payrolls 52,000.
March and April payrolls were revised up by a combined 93,000, to 214,000 and 179,000 respectively, with leisure and hospitality adding 70,000 jobs and local government 55,000. The stronger report sent Treasuries lower and drove traders to fully price in a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike by year-end, while interest-rate futures lifted the odds of a December increase to 63% from 48% just before the data.
