South Korea Summons Iran Envoy After Probe Links HMM Namu Strike to Iranian Noor Missiles
South Korea summoned Iran’s ambassador on Wednesday after an investigation concluded that the May 4 attack on the South Korean-operated HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz likely involved Iranian-developed Noor-series anti-ship missiles. First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo said technical analysis showed two unidentified airborne objects struck the vessel, with the first warhead failing to detonate and the second exploding on impact.
Park said multiple pieces of evidence pointed toward Iran, though Seoul couldn’t confirm the launch site, the exact perpetrator or whether the strike was intentional. South Korea said it demanded that Iran take responsible measures to prevent a repeat of attacks near the waterway, where shipping security has come under renewed scrutiny after U.S. Central Command said Monday it struck missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines in southern Iran.
