Qatar Rejects Permanent Hormuz Fees, Says Temporary Toll Could Restore Shipping

worldmiddle-eastpoliticsmaritimeus-foreign-policy 375 posts · 85 accounts

Qatar opposes permanent legal fees for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz but would consider a temporary toll to help restore normal passage, Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said at an Asian defense conference in Singapore on Saturday. Permanent charges would affect consumers, while short-term fees for mine clearing or similar purposes could be considered, he said.

The comments add a new Gulf-state position to a dispute over transit charges in the waterway after the US warned Oman it could face sanctions if it helped Iran establish a tolling system and later said Muscat had assured Washington there were no plans for such fees. Treasury also sanctioned Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that almost 2,000 ships were waiting to leave the Gulf, underscoring the continued disruption to shipping through Hormuz.
