Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said any US sanctions relief for Iran would be phased in slowly and tied to milestones Tehran would have to meet, signaling that any easing would be conditional rather than automatic. Speaking after remarks at the Reagan National Economic Forum in Simi Valley, California, Bessent said the administration could also ramp up sanctions if a deal is not imminent and described three possible outcomes with Iran: a deal, no deal, or “kinetic” action.
The comments add caution to a reported US-Iran framework under which negotiators were said to have drafted a 60-day memorandum to extend a ceasefire and open talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Earlier, President Donald Trump publicly outlined terms including unrestricted, toll-free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade, but Iranian outlets later disputed key elements of that description, underscoring that any agreement remains unsettled.
