Space Force Awards SpaceX $4.16 Billion to Build Air and Missile Tracking Satellite Constellation

sciencespacebusiness 13 posts · 11 accounts

SpaceX won a $4.16 billion US Space Force contract to build a satellite constellation that can track aircraft, cruise missiles and other airborne threats globally from orbit. The award is for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator, or SB-AMTI, program and is part of President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome defensive shield.

The system is meant to give the Joint Force persistent tracking of contested airspace from space as traditional airborne platforms face growing pressure from advanced air-defense systems, according to Space Force statements cited in the posts. The initial award is projected to field a constellation by 2028.

You’d think there would be friction between the Air Force and the Space Force now that AMTI, GMTI, and several core missions are being shared or transitioning heavily toward orbit. Not quite.
