Treasury Sanctions Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, Targeting Hormuz Tolls
The US sanctioned Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a new government agency responsible for transit through the Strait of Hormuz, adding it to the Treasury Department's sanctions list. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the action targets Hormuz tolls and shows Washington is maintaining “maximum pressure” on Iran.
The move adds a concrete penalty as negotiations with Tehran remain unresolved and sharpens Washington's opposition to an Iranian fee or permit system in the waterway. Earlier, the White House rejected an Iranian state-media account of a draft memorandum of understanding as a fabrication, while President Donald Trump said any deal would have to reopen the strait immediately to all ships and would not include sanctions relief for Iran.
