Anthropic in Early Talks to Use Microsoft’s Maia AI Chips
Anthropic is in early talks to rent Azure servers powered by Microsoft’s in-house Maia AI chips as the startup seeks more computing power to meet demand for its services, according to The Information. The discussions are at an early stage and may not result in an agreement. Maia is designed to lower inference costs and improve speed for existing models rather than train new ones.
The prospective deal would deepen ties between the companies as Anthropic ramps Azure usage; the report said Anthropic has committed $30 billion of spending on Azure and that Claude usage for Microsoft Copilot has reached at least $500 million. It would also add another compute source after Anthropic expanded its SpaceX partnership on May 20 to scale up GB200 capacity in Colossus 2 throughout June, with SpaceX disclosing a separate agreement worth $1.25 billion a month through May 2029 for capacity across Colossus and Colossus II.
