U.S. Denies Iranian Report of Oil-Sanctions Waiver During Ongoing Negotiations

A U.S. official said an Iranian state-media report that Washington had agreed to lift oil sanctions while talks are ongoing was false, according to comments relayed by CNBC reporter Megan Cassella. The denial directly rebuts an earlier report from Iran’s Guards-linked Tasnim news agency that had described temporary oil-sanctions relief in the latest U.S. negotiating text.

Earlier Monday, Tasnim, citing a source close to Iran’s negotiating team, reported that the U.S. had accepted waiving sanctions on Iranian oil exports during the negotiation period through temporary waivers from the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control until a final agreement, while Iran insisted that all sanctions be fully lifted. The dispute over sanctions relief comes as Tehran’s latest proposal is being exchanged with Washington through Pakistan in talks over ending the war, with Iranian reports linking oil relief to a peace deal and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
