US-China Truce May Stretch Into 2026; $30 Billion Goods Eyed for Tariff Cuts
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US and China may keep their trade truce on critical minerals and tariff rates in place beyond the current November deadline, potentially stretching the arrangement into 2026 through additional meetings, even as the Trump administration is not rushing to extend it. He said the two sides plan to identify an initial $30 billion of non-critical goods eligible for reduced or zero tariffs under a new trade protocol and are developing an investment framework to clarify deals that would not require CFIUS national-security reviews.
The governments have also agreed to launch a government-to-government dialogue on artificial intelligence. Bessent said consultations on AI guardrails could begin within four to eight weeks, while Beijing said the two countries should work together to promote AI development and governance.
