134 Million-Barrel Brent Put Spread Rattles Oil Market as CFTC Probes Earlier Trades
A large bearish options position in Brent crude added to scrutiny of unusual oil-market flows after put options tied to 134 million barrels traded in a single $91/$90 spread on Tuesday, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The buyer would profit by as much as $129 million if July futures fall about 19% from current levels by the May 26 expiry.
The transaction came as Iran-related headlines continued to swing prices and as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission probed a surge in oil futures trading before President Donald Trump's March 23 social-media post delaying planned strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure, according to the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper said more than $800 million of oil futures changed hands shortly before the post, and that the CFTC is interested in at least three firms, including Qube Research & Technologies, Forza Fund and Totsa.
