IEA Says Oil Stock Draws Hit Record Pace Amid Middle East War
Countries are tapping oil inventories and strategic reserves at a record pace to offset unprecedented supply disruptions from the Middle East war, the International Energy Agency said Wednesday. In the US, releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve exceeded 1.2 million barrels a day last week, helping sustain elevated oil exports.
The update builds on the agency's earlier warning that global oil supply fell 1.8 million barrels a day in April to 95.1 million, taking cumulative losses since February to 12.8 million barrels a day, while observed inventories shrank by 129 million barrels in March and another 117 million in April. The tighter market has coincided with a halt in loadings at Iran's Kharg Island export hub, where satellite imagery showed no ocean-going tankers on May 8, 9 or 11, the longest stretch without a loading since the war began.
