Bank Indonesia Pledges FX Support as Rupiah Hits Fresh Record Low
Bank Indonesia pledged “smart interventions” in the foreign-exchange market after the rupiah slid to a fresh record low. The currency opened weaker at 17,520 per dollar in early trading, while the Jakarta Composite Index fell to a one-year low of 6,741.60, extending pressure across Indonesian assets.
The move marks a further deterioration from the broader regional selloff that had already pushed the rupiah below 17,500 and weighed on Asian currencies as deadlock in US-Iran talks kept oil prices elevated and raised concerns over the ceasefire tied to the Strait of Hormuz. The latest intervention signal underscores the strain on Indonesia’s markets as the weaker currency and higher energy costs ripple through the region.
