IEA Sees Deeper Oil Shortfall as Iran's Kharg Export Loadings Remain Stalled
The International Energy Agency deepened its assessment of the oil-market damage from the Iran war and Strait of Hormuz disruption, saying global supply fell another 1.8 million barrels a day in April to 95.1 million and that cumulative losses since February reached 12.8 million barrels a day. In its monthly report, the IEA said output from Gulf countries affected by the closure of Hormuz was 14.4 million barrels a day below pre-war levels, global observed inventories fell by 129 million barrels in March and a further 117 million in April, and world supply is now seen running 1.78 million barrels a day below demand in 2026, with refinery runs falling by 1.6 million barrels a day.
That tighter outlook comes as Iran's main export terminal at Kharg Island appears to remain stalled. Satellite imagery compiled by Bloomberg from European Union Sentinel data showed no oil tankers berthed there on May 8, 9 or 11, the longest stretch without a loading since the war began; earlier ship-tracking data from TankerTrackers indicated Iran had gone 28 days without a successful seaborne crude export. With ships unable to leave the Persian Gulf because of the US naval blockade, tankers have increasingly been used as floating storage, raising the risk that Tehran may eventually need to curb output if storage fills.
