US April Inflation Hits 3.8%, Tops Forecasts at Three-Year High
U.S. consumer prices rose 3.8% in April from a year earlier, above the 3.7% forecast and the highest reading in three years, after earlier forecasts had pointed to the fastest annual inflation gain in more than 2-1/2 years. The consumer price index increased 0.6% from the previous month, matching estimates but down from 0.9% previously. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 2.8% from a year earlier and 0.4% on the month, both above forecasts, with the monthly core gain accelerating from 0.2% previously.
Soaring gasoline prices accounted for more than 40% of April's monthly increase, while shelter and food also pushed prices higher. Grocery prices rose 0.68% in April, the biggest monthly gain since August 2022, and inflation outpaced wage gains of 3.6% over the past year for the first time in about three years. Over the past three months, core CPI has increased at an annualized pace of 3.2%.
