IMF Warns Sustained $120 Oil Could Push World Economy Into Recession
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that sustained oil prices of $120 to $130 a barrel through 2027 could push the global economy into a technical recession. Speaking in Poznań, she said such price levels would slow global growth to around 2% and that prolonged energy-price pressure would weigh heavily on demand and economic stability.
The warning adds a broader global risk assessment to a story already centered on the Iran conflict and supply disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, Australia said in budget scenario analysis that a worsening conflict could send oil to $200 a barrel and trigger a global economic shock, while Brent crude had climbed to around $105 after President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest peace proposal and shipping through the waterway remained disrupted.
