Australia Warns Iran Escalation Could Send Oil to $200 a Barrel
Australia’s government used its annual budget to model a worsening Iran conflict that would drive oil to $200 a barrel and trigger a global economic shock. Treasury scenario analysis said prolonged fighting or damage to Middle East energy routes could disrupt oil supplies, push inflation above 7% and shrink Australia’s economy, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers saying the outlook now depends heavily on how the conflict develops.
The warning comes as market strains were already intensifying after President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal and doubts grew over the ceasefire tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping through the waterway remained disrupted, and Brent crude had earlier climbed to around $105 a barrel as investors weighed the risk of a longer conflict.
