US Expands Iran Oil Sanctions to Hengli Petrochemical and 40 Shipping Firms
The US Treasury expanded its Iran oil sanctions to include Hengli Petrochemical, identified as China’s second-largest teapot refinery, roughly 40 shipping firms tied to Iran’s shadow fleet and independent teapot refineries that process sanctioned Iranian crude. The latest action broadens Washington’s effort from intermediary networks to Chinese refiners and shipping operators linked to Iran’s oil trade.
The move follows sanctions announced earlier this week against 12 Iran-linked individuals and entities accused of helping the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sell and ship Iranian oil to China, including companies in Hong Kong, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Beijing responded to the latest measures with a formal prohibition order directing Chinese citizens and companies not to comply.
