TSMC Outlines 18-Fab Expansion as AI Drives $1.5 Trillion Chip Outlook

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. outlined a broader global manufacturing and packaging buildout at its Taiwan technology symposium, saying it is constructing or modifying 18 fabs worldwide, including five advanced packaging plants, as AI demand drives its forecast for the global chip market to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030.

Twelve of the 18 facilities are in Taiwan, and TSMC said its expansion pace has doubled to nine new plants a year in 2025-2026 from four a year in 2017-2024. The company also said N2 fabs in Hsinchu and Kaohsiung are in mass production, with first-year output expected to be 45% higher than N3, while A14 has achieved more than 80% yield on 256Mb SRAM and offers a 10%-15% speed boost or 25%-30% lower power use than N2.
