Canada recorded a merchandise-trade surplus of C$1.78 billion, or about US$1.31 billion, in March, its first surplus in six months, according to Statistics Canada. The result compared with expectations for a C$2.5 billion deficit and followed the previous month's C$5.74 billion shortfall.
Surging exports of gold and oil helped push the merchandise trade balance back into surplus in March.
