Iran Threatens Hormuz Oil Shipments if Attacked, Says Submarines Trigger-Ready
Iran expanded its warnings over the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, saying countries supporting or enforcing US sanctions could face difficulties transiting the waterway and that it would not allow any oil shipments through the chokepoint if the Islamic Republic came under attack. Mohammad Akraminia, a spokesman for Iran's army, said Tehran was exercising what he described as its rights over the strait, while IRGC Navy commander Saeed Siah-Sarani warned of blocking oil shipments and Navy Commander Shahram Irani said domestically built light submarines were operating there in a "trigger-ready" state.
The statements add to a standoff that escalated after US forces disabled three empty Iranian-flagged tankers — Hasna, Sea Star III and Sevda — while enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports. Iran's IRGC Navy had already warned that any further attack on its tankers or commercial vessels would prompt strikes on a US base in the region and American ships, and armed forces spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi said Sunday that any country taking action against the Islamic Republic would face a "decisive response."
