UAE Sends Crude Through Hormuz With Trackers Off as 1,600 Ships Remain Stuck

businessenergy-marketsoilpoliticsmaritimewar 137 posts · 53 accounts

The United Arab Emirates and oil buyers have recently sent several crude tankers through the Strait of Hormuz with their location trackers turned off to avoid Iranian attacks, in a bid to move barrels bottled up in the Gulf. The cargoes were only a fraction of the UAE’s typical exports before the war, underscoring how little traffic has resumed through the chokepoint.

The move comes after U.S. escort attempts were followed by attacks on merchant shipping and Iran’s introduction of permit-based transit rules and a new authority to manage traffic through Hormuz. About 1,600 ships are reported stuck near the strait. CMA CGM said its small container ship San Antonio was attacked on May 5 while transiting the waterway, causing crew injuries and vessel damage, while A.P. Moller-Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc said the conflict is adding about $500 million a month of costs that the carrier expects to pass on to customers.
