Hormuz Reopening Faces 6-8 Week Delay as Shipowners Avoid Passage
Normal traffic is unlikely to return quickly to the Strait of Hormuz even as Iran formalizes new transit controls. Ships attempting to cross on Wednesday received verbal warnings from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy that the waterway remained blocked, while shipowners and brokers said vessels had moved clear after President Donald Trump ended a U.S. effort to guide ships through the strait, saying the initiative lacked clarity and sufficient security guarantees. Iran has also launched a website and authority to oversee traffic through Hormuz, signaling plans to charge ships for safe passage.
The disruption is expected to outlast any near-term diplomatic breakthrough. Rystad Energy said oil flows would take at least six to eight weeks to recover to near pre-conflict volumes because transit insurance must be repriced, vessel operator access restored and shippers’ confidence rebuilt. Kpler said a full reopening is unlikely under Iranian control, with flows recovering only to about 40% to 50% of capacity. The warnings and market caution contrast with Iran’s earlier claim that new Hormuz protocols would allow safe and stable passage.
