Global Gold ETFs Draw $6.6 Billion as China Extends Reserve-Buying Streak
Global physical gold-backed ETFs recorded $6.6 billion of inflows in April, reversing March’s record $12 billion outflow and lifting year-to-date inflows to $19 billion. The rebound came as the People’s Bank of China reported it added 260,000 ounces of gold to reserves in April, its largest monthly increase since December 2024, extending the country’s official gold-buying streak to 18 consecutive months.
European funds led April’s ETF inflows with $3.7 billion, followed by Asia at $1.8 billion and North America at $1.0 billion. The monthly inflows lifted global gold ETF assets under management by 1% from a month earlier to $615 billion and holdings by 45 tonnes to 4,137 tonnes, while China’s official gold holdings rose to a record 2,322 tonnes after purchases of 8 tonnes in April and 5 tonnes in March.
