US Sanctions Iraq Deputy Oil Minister Over Iran-Linked Oil Diversion
The US sanctioned Iraq’s Deputy Oil Minister Ali Maarij Al-Bahadly and three militia leaders, accusing them of exploiting Iraq’s oil sector for the benefit of Iran and its proxy militias. The action adds to pressure on Tehran and its regional proxies.
Treasury said Al-Bahadly helped route several million dollars’ worth of Iraqi oil a day to Iran-affiliated smuggler Salim Ahmed Said, who blended it with Iranian crude and sent it to market disguised as Iraqi oil through falsified documents. The department also designated senior leaders of Kata’ib Sayyid Al-Shuhada and Asa’ib Ahl Al-Haq.
