Iraq Oil Ministry Denies US Accusations Against Deputy Minister After Sanctions
Iraq’s oil ministry denied US accusations against Deputy Oil Minister Ali Maarij Al-Bahadly after Washington sanctioned him over allegations that he helped Iran bypass restrictions on oil exports. The public rebuttal comes as the US steps up pressure on Baghdad over ties to Iranian-linked groups.
The Treasury has said Al-Bahadly helped route several million dollars’ worth of Iraqi oil a day to Iran-affiliated smuggler Salim Ahmed Said, who blended it with Iranian crude and used falsified documents to sell it as Iraqi oil. The sanctions package also targeted three militia leaders from Kata’ib Sayyid Al-Shuhada and Asa’ib Ahl Al-Haq.
