AMD Weighs Samsung Foundry for 2nm Chips Amid TSMC Capacity Squeeze

Samsung Electronics is in substantive discussions with Advanced Micro Devices over a 2-nanometer foundry order, according to industry sources cited in the report. The talks have advanced since AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su visited Korea in March and toured Samsung's Pyeongtaek foundry site, with concrete results expected in the near term. A deal would give AMD another manufacturing option for next-generation chips and strengthen Samsung Foundry's push to win more leading-edge business.

The reported talks come as AI-related demand lifts orders for both GPUs and CPUs while supply remains tight. AMD relies largely on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. for CPU production, but the report said TSMC has struggled to meet demand as orders from customers including Nvidia, Tesla and Apple rise, with much of its 2-nanometer-and-below capacity reportedly booked through 2028 and beyond. AMD reported first-quarter revenue of $10.25 billion, up 38% from a year earlier.
