France Appoints Magistrate in X Probe of Musk and Former CEO Yaccarino
French judicial authorities have appointed an investigating magistrate to examine alleged abuses linked to Elon Musk's social-media platform X, widening a case that now includes Musk and former X Chief Executive Officer Linda Yaccarino over their roles running the service. The investigation, opened in January 2025 over suspected interference in French politics, has expanded to allegations of Holocaust denial, distribution of sexual deepfakes, unlawful collection of personal data, dissemination of non-consensual content and possible complicity in sharing child sexual abuse material.
The move further escalates a case that Paris prosecutors earlier this week turned into a criminal probe into the functioning of X, with reporting at the time pointing to alleged algorithmic manipulation and sexual deepfakes. French prosecutors had also said Musk and X should be charged, and authorities said Musk and Yaccarino did not respond to a summons for an informal interview.
