Senate Democrats Block House Bill Barring Fed Retail CBDC
Senate Democrats blocked a House-passed bill that would have prohibited the Federal Reserve from issuing a retail central bank digital currency. A central bank digital currency would be a government-issued digital dollar.
House backers say the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act would prohibit the Federal Reserve from issuing a CBDC directly to individuals or indirectly through intermediaries. The House description also says the bill would bar the Fed from using any CBDC to implement monetary policy and would require Congress to authorize any government-created digital dollar.
