US Treasury Sanctions Three Iranian Exchange Houses
The US Treasury said its Office of Foreign Assets Control designated three Iranian foreign currency exchange houses and their associated front companies as part of a sanctions campaign called Economic Fury. Treasury said the exchange houses collectively facilitate billions of dollars in foreign-currency transactions each year.
According to Treasury, the firms help convert proceeds from Iran’s oil sales — which it said are primarily settled in Chinese yuan — into currencies more readily used by the Iranian military and its partners and proxies. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US would continue targeting Tehran’s ability to generate, move and repatriate funds and pursue those enabling sanctions evasion.
