UAE Quits OPEC and OPEC+ in Blow to Saudi Arabia
The United Arab Emirates said Tuesday it will leave OPEC and OPEC+ effective May 1, dealing a major blow to the producer alliance and its de facto leader, Saudi Arabia, amid an energy shock tied to the Iran war. Abu Dhabi said the move reflects a policy shift based on long-term market fundamentals and said it would bring any additional production to market gradually and in line with demand and market conditions.
Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei said the decision followed a lengthy strategic review and would give the UAE more flexibility because it would no longer have obligations under the group. He said the UAE did not directly consult other producers, including Saudi Arabia, before acting, and said the timing should not have a large immediate market impact because the oil market is undersupplied. The move gives the UAE greater autonomy over production levels and scope to use capacity it has invested in without quota constraints.
