WaferChem Develops ABF Rival Amid AI Chip Material Shortage
Taiwan’s WaferChem Technology has developed Taiwan Build-Up Film, a rival to Ajinomoto Build-up Film, according to a media report. The product is aimed at easing a severe shortage of ABF, a material used to help address heat issues in GPUs and other AI chips. WaferChem’s film was described as tougher than ABF and customizable for specific client needs.
The report said the film has passed verification by several manufacturers in Taiwan and overseas and is already shipping in small volumes. Ajinomoto controls more than 95% of the ABF market, but the AI boom and supply-chain security concerns have created an opening for alternatives, with about a dozen companies making or qualifying rival films, led by Sekisui Chemical.
