United CEO Says American Rejected Merger Approach
United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby said he approached American Airlines about exploring a combination, but American rejected the idea and talks have ended. Kirby said the tie-up was aimed at expanding routes, improving service and helping the airlines compete more effectively with foreign carriers, and that he believed it could win regulatory approval.
American said this month that it was not interested in a deal and warned that a combination would be negative for competition and consumers. American’s market capitalization is about $8 billion, compared with about $30 billion for United.
