Iran Says Hormuz Stays Closed as US Blockade Disrupts Shipping

worldmiddle-eastpoliticsmaritimebusinessenergy-markets 53 posts · 24 accounts

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz largely ground to a halt on Thursday after Iran fired on commercial ships and seized at least two vessels, tightening its grip on the strategic waterway as Tehran said it would not reopen the route while a US blockade remains in place. The escalation came after President Donald Trump said he was indefinitely calling off attacks, with no sign peace talks were restarting.

US Central Command said American forces have directed 31 vessels to turn around or return to port since the blockade began, with most of them oil tankers. Reuters also reported that US forces intercepted three Iranian oil tankers in Asian waters, while oil prices rose as shipping disruptions persisted and progress in US-Iran talks remained elusive.
