Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Closed After U.S. Boards Sanctioned Tanker
Iran has reportedly declared the Strait of Hormuz closed until further notice, with semi-official Tasnim saying the move followed recent U.S. action against Iran-linked vessels. The U.S. military said its forces overnight boarded the stateless, sanctioned tanker M/T Tifani without incident in the Indo-Pacific, describing the operation as part of wider enforcement against vessels providing material support to Iran.
The reported closure comes amid a worsening shipping crunch in the strait. The UN maritime agency is urging help for around 20,000 seafarers and 2,000 ships stranded there, while Asian oil buyers' earlier workarounds are losing effectiveness as floating Russian and Iranian cargoes dwindle and traffic remains at a standstill.
