Trump DOJ Seeks Ballroom Suit Dismissal After Dinner Shooting
President Donald Trump’s Justice Department is using Saturday’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to press preservationists to drop a lawsuit over his planned $400 million White House ballroom. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate sent a letter to lawyers for the National Trust for Historic Preservation demanding a voluntary dismissal by 9 a.m. Monday and said the government would otherwise seek to dissolve the injunction and dismiss the case.
The department argued that the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was held, is “demonstrably unsafe” for the president, citing the latest shooting and Ronald Reagan’s 1981 shooting at the same venue. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the attack likely targeted Trump administration officials, while Trump said the suspect did not come close to the ballroom; a statement viewed by The Wall Street Journal described hotel security lapses that made bringing firearms into the building easier than expected.
