Reeves Calls Mississippi Redistricting Session After Callais Decision
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said he is calling a special session of the state legislature on redistricting and the Voting Rights Act. Under his proclamation, the session will convene on the calendar day 21 days after the U.S. Supreme Court issues its decision in Callais.
Reeves said the pending ruling could change how electoral maps are drawn and argued that federal law requires the Mississippi Legislature to have the first opportunity to redraw the maps once the court clarifies the rules. The case concerns whether the Voting Rights Act allows congressional districts to be drawn based on race.
