Sweden Launches New Foreign Intelligence Service Modelled on Britain’s MI6
Sweden is establishing a new foreign intelligence service that will operate independently of the armed forces and report directly to the government. The agency, modelled on Britain’s MI6, will work alongside military intelligence and assume control of overseas agent recruitment and secret operations previously managed by the military.
The structural shift follows reported intelligence failures before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It establishes Sweden’s first civilian foreign-intelligence service designed to centralize and expand covert operations abroad.
