Austria Extends Mandatory Military Service to Nine Months and Raises Conscript Pay to 1,000 Euros
Austria has proposed extending mandatory military service from six to nine months and doubling conscript pay to €1,000 per month as part of a major defense reform.
The legislation introduces a new reservist system requiring former conscripts to attend periodic exercises within 10 years. Chancellor Christian Stocker cited Russia's war in Ukraine and hybrid warfare threats as catalysts for the overhaul, noting the measures still require a two-thirds parliamentary majority to become law.
