New York City Tipping Rules Force Uber and DoorDash to Return $104 Million in Tips to Workers

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city’s push for Uber Eats and DoorDash to restore checkout tipping buttons and transparency has returned $104 million in tips to workers in the past six months. New protections took effect on Jan. 26, leading to a doubling of tips for the city’s roughly 70,000 app-based delivery workers.

According to the mayor’s administration, hidden tip options and reduced default rates previously caused a 79% decline in worker tips, costing the gig workforce an estimated $550 million. On average, drivers are now on track to receive an additional $2,287 annually, bringing the total annual figure to $184 million. City officials noted the regulations did not reduce food-delivery demand.
